白洲次郎

大富豪の息子として生まれた白洲はケンブリッジ大学に学び、完璧な英語を話した。吉田茂駐英大使の知己を得て、戦後は吉田の名代としてGHQとの各種交渉を任されていた。
ある会議の後、米軍の将校（もちろんアメリカ人）に「白洲さんは英語が堪能ですね」と言われると、
「君ももっと勉強すれば、僕くらいにはなれるさ」
と返して悠然と去っていった。
GHQはそんな白洲を「従順ならざる唯一の日本人」と評したという。
